We will try to ask questions about the meaning of life. It is the ultimate question that a spiritually advanced man can ask. In the evolutionary series of animal species man is in fact the first one who can ask this question, reflect on it, and search in his proportionate spiritual capability for a proportionately deep understanding.
It is a crucial question that for millennia occupied spiritually thinking individuals who rightly assumed that it is the gate to a more perfect, or even accomplished spiritual evolutionary journey; that it is the gate to the understanding of the existence of the "Creative Work." And that it is therefore also the gate to an understanding of oneself, – to our notion of " I am", – to an understanding of oneself in the entire existence (the bytí). To one's own attitude towards his surroundings, be it animate (organic) or inanimate (inorganic). To an understanding of one's own being as a component of the overall evolutionary series of a being. To an understanding of brotherhood with all that exists as a different entity of life than I am, to a continuous deepening of one's understanding and comprehension leading up to the knowledge that I am all that exists, – I, this being that is now a man, this unit that is a particle in the endless sea of other units. And yet I am the unity, I am that entire endless existence, I am all the other particles that I up to now considered as separated, individual, – specific beings. Then it is not the diversity and variety of the Creative Work as I perceived it until now, but only the unity, always and everywhere.
It is an eternal question that necessarily arises at a certain level of spiritual development, that provokes the response in the depths of a spirit where the evolutionary lower species than man cannot yet reach with its mind.
It is a question that in all eras and in all spiritual cultures either directly or indirectly occupied a human being and created a fundamental and initial issue of all original and genuine spiritual teachings.
We will now occupy our minds with it. The following words are intended for those who already know many things from the spiritual teaching and who are familiar with at least the common concepts contained in the previous lectures.
It will be necessary to think over every sentence. Should it seem that you understood, try to understand even deeper. If you know that you understood all, immerse yourself one more time in reading, and you will understand more.
