Then, the gradual communist oppression became nearly unbearable. Unfortunately, the contacts would be broken off more and more and Mr J.Z. stopped receiving letters from abroad. The STB (State Secret Police) were impounding these letters as they had been expected to have been posted. They suspected him of transferring subversive correspondence to foreign countries. That incessant spying, engaging inciters, preventing him from his activities and altogether in connection with the effort to make him move from his flat definitely did not have a good impact on his health.

The next door flat to Mr J.Z.’s place, was allotted to a mentally ill lodger who would immediately shout the most vulgar expressions whenever she heard a voice behind the wall. She bothered entering patients in the corridor and even threatened Mr J.Z. with a knife in hand. It was always deliverance when after making some trouble in the street, she was taken to Bohnice straight away (a lunatic asylum in Prague). Then she would usually stay there for a couple of weeks.
